Whale sharks are one of the most fascinating creatures that you can witness when out on a dive. Despite being the largest living fish on the planet, these creatures are gentle giants that present no risk to humans swimming near them. And the experience of sharing space with such an impressive and majestic creature is a sight that many divers hope to see during their lives. To help you acheive all of your diving goals, this article will give you some tips on the best places around the world to go diving if you want to catch a glimpse of a whale shark.

Mexico

There are more whale shark sightings off the coast of Mexico than in any other country, so this is a great place to start your diving adventure. The best areas to visit if you’d like to see a whale shark are around the Yucatan Pennisula between June and September or near the Baja Penninsula in early winter or spring.

The Philippines

After Mexico, the next highest whale shark population lives around the Philippines, particularly the Donsol Bay area. There are tours to help you encounter these amazing animals and viewing them is very regulated. Be aware before your travels that people are only allowed to snorkel with whale sharks and cannot dive with them in this area.

Tanzania

The island of Mafia off the shore of Tanzania is another area where people can frequently see whale sharks between October and March. Another bonus to joining a whale shark tour in this area is that this location is not very popular yet and has less tourist traffic than many other destinations.
